ABUSE AND THE ABUSER
GOD CARES - DO YOU?
By Synthia Esther
MaryAnn shared her grief as she retold her story. "We had just parked the car and were walking the distance of the parking lot towards the large department store when we noticed a middle age couple standing by the trunk of their car. Never had I nor my teenage daughter experienced the horror our eyes beheld. Rather than putting their purchased bags into the trunk of their car, the man was shoving his crying, distressed toddler son into the trunk. In an effort to close the lid, the woman helped the man by punching the young inocent boy in the back. A blow that seemed to take the toddlers breath away. She turned to see if anyone was looking, and saw our eyes had witnessed the entire abusive deed. The man quickly grab his son putting him in the back seat of the car. He then motioned for his wife to get into the car, shouting she was creating a scene."
Though the names have been changed, this is a true abuse story. And the sad fact is that such abuse happens every day, every hour, every minute to those who are abused. And we wonder why there are serial killers? Many times, in many different ways, abuse causes the the abused to one day become the abuser. It is this vicious cycle that continues to perpetuate the problem. Abuse not only extends its harsh and horrific cause and effect upon humanity, but God's animal kingdom as well. It is not only our duty to report abuse, it is God's will. Proverbs 21:3, "To do what is right and just is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice."
THE MACDONALD TRIAD
THE MACDONALD TRIAD - WARNING SIGNS FOR THE TENDENCY TO KILL
The "MacDonald Triad," developed in 1963 by J. M. MacDonald in his article, "Threat to Kill", in the American Journal of Psychiatry, includes cruelty to animals as one of three major personality traits in children that are said to be warning signs for the tendency to become a serial killer. The other two factors within the MacDonald Triad are fire starting (just for fun and destruction), and bed wetting beyond an age deemed normal by medical professionals.
Parents passing personality and attitude traits onto their children is no surprise to God with Biblical warnings concerning generational blessings and curses (reference article, "Addiction Definitions And Hypothesis"). But it is also the consensus of belief among psychologists and criminologist that cruelty to animals can develop into violent behavior and cruelty towards humans. The FBI relates animal abuse and cruelty to be one of the predictors of violence and considers past animal abuse when profiling killers. The U.S. Department of Justice emphasizes the importance of including animal abuse when assessing youth who are at risk of committing interpersonal violence. Criminal animal abuse statistics are not only found among rapists, murderers and serial killers but also in regards to general criminal behavior such as theft and burglary.
A study in 1997 by the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and Northeastern University found that seventy percent of all animal abusers have committed at least one other criminal offense and that almost forty percent had committed violent crimes against people. They also found that over a twenty year period, a group of individuals who had abused animals as youths were five times more likely to commit violent crimes, four times more likely to commit property crimes and three times more likely to have drug or disorderly conduct offenses than a matched group of non animal abusers.
It is apparent in documented evidence that the sadistic killing patterns of animals by children are often used as an educational training ground of past experience by many notorious serial killers. A few examples of such violent "Antisocial Behavior" can be seen among sexual serial killers; Ted Bundy, *David Berkowitz (a.k.a."Son of Sam" use to start fires and poisoned and killed his mother's bird ), Albert De Salvo, (also known to possibly be the "Boston Strangler"), and Jeffery Dahmer.
*David Berkowitz accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior while incarcerated. He has a prison and writing ministry proclaiming the truth of God's word to all who will listen. David is now nick named "The Son Of Hope" by all who know him. I have communicated with David Berkowitz by way of letter on several occasions with questions concerning my research. He does not profit from any of his books, videos or written material and his only desire is to give testimony of God's saving grace. ABUSE CAUGHT ON TAPE
Cell phone videos showed the mentally disabled forced to fight for the amusement of night shift employees at the Texas facility.
Around the stroke of midnight or a little there after, a Corpus Christi, Texas, state facility for the mentally disabled was turned into a ”Fight Club,” by the night shift hired to care for them. Fear gripped the hearts of male residents who were made to fight much like Michael Vick’s pit bull dogs. Trained to battle, coached and pitted against one another, the male residents were urged on by employees, who taunted them with threats. The brutal fight scenes were caught on cell phone video tape and brought to police attention after one of the school employees left his phone at a hospital and it was turned over to police. In an attempt to find out who the cell phone’s owner was, the police watched the recorded ”Fight Club” video’s, which then became disturbing state evidence.
According to ABC News Reports, one resident is seen on the video trying to run away from his attacker and a large group of employees and residents tracking him through the halls. When cornered, he moans and wails telling employees, “I will behave.” The Associated Press reports authorities stated, resident’s were forced to shove, punch and strike each other. A judge ordered the video tapes released without any restriction on their use, to attorney Bob Hilliard, who is suing the state on behalf of former resident, Armando Hernandez. Hilliard said, “It happened for over a year and it happened for many nights of the week.” Mentally challenged Hernandez says he was fearful to even tell his mother of what was happening during the night. Hernandez told ABC News, “They say ’snitches get stitches.” Attorney Hilliard is quoted as stating, “There are no words as strong as the faces of these residents. It is a place past fear. It’s a place where they have almost accepted that the school where they’re locked into could very well end up being a coffin for them.”
INDICTED ON CHARGES OF CAUSING INJURY TO A DISABLED PERSON
Six former employees were indicted on charges of causing injury to a disabled person. Prosecutors identified the ring leader as Timothy Dixon, 30, who police say can be heard on the video calling play by play of the fight as if he were ring announcer. The cell phone videos are the latest example of confounding, disturbing conditions at the 12 Texas schools for the developmentally challenged and disabled. A federal civil rights investigation, completed before these cell phone videos were inadvertently discovered by police, found that more than 800 employees had been suspended or fired for abusing facility residents since 2004. A 2008 Federal report cited negligent and abusive care that violated residents’ rights, citing 53 deaths linked to preventable conditions at the institutions.
NO DOUBT THIS NEWS REPORT PROVIDES EVIDENCE OF BAD EMPLOYEES WITH SICK AND EVIL INTENTIONS. BUT WHAT ABOUT LOVING INTENTIONS FROM GOOD EMPLOYEES ?
In 1925, two young medical school graduates and their father started a tiny sanitarium for mental patients on a farm outside Topeka, Kansas. At the time when the “rest cure” was in vogue in psychiatry, this father-and-son team determined to create a family atmosphere among their patients. The nurses were given specific training on how they were to behave toward specific patients: “Let him know that you value and like him.” “Be kind but firm with this woman – don’t let her become worse.” Those young doctors were Karl and William Menninger, and the Menninger Clinic, using such “revolutionary” methods, has become world famous.
WE CAN LIVE IF WE HAVE LOVE
Karl Menninger, summing up, said, “Love is the medicine for the sickness of mankind. We can live if we have love.” Jesus Christ is love - John 3:16-17.
